Westward Bound - West Virginia, or "There's Coal in Them Thar Hills"

Left the heat and humidity of Virginia for...the heat and humidity of West Virginia!  The start of a three-month trek west to Colorado and Utah should bring lots of interesting sights, people, places and (this is me, after all) food!

First stop: Babcock State Park,  WV
The new mill, a replica of an old one which stood here

Then, on through the rain to the New River Gorge National River and the Canyon Rim Visitor's Center

The longest single steel arch span in the WORLD!
876 feet above the river, and yes....
these people climbed all that way up... on ropes!

Beckley Court Square

Pay your parking or the fine!

Twin Falls State Park, WV. (Unknown family used for scale)
Through the hills and valleys of the heart of West Virginia coal country, to the town of Williamson, where there's a building made of coal from this "billion dollar coal field."

And, lest we forget, this is the home of the Hatfields and McCoys
My final stop in WV is Cumberland State Falls State Park, where this falls, the largest south of Niagra and east of the Rockies, is the only place in the Western Hemisphere where it's possible to see a moonbow.

  1. Dear Eve,
I had the pleasure of visiting the New River Gorge on a Posse Adventure! I am so grateful for haven been introduced to beautiful woman and all their journeys. I'll need to check out the town of Williamson(maiden name) for ancestors. I was never interested in history as a child but as I grow older, I can't get enough of it!
    Thank you
    Patsy
