Shakers, Superman and Lincoln - Illinois Rocks!

My journey continues, into serious farming country, with a lot of Amish communities as well.  Just had to stop here to check out the gift shop for...you guessed it...food! Got some delicious sweet pepper relish.

From the peaceful farm villages to the bustling metropolis of, well, Metropolis where, in 1970-ish the Illinois State Senate declared it to be the official home of Superman, and a 15-foot tall statue of the man of steel was erected in front of the courthouse.  There's a museum with some authentic Hollywood memorabilia, several phone booths and cutout figures for photo opportunities, and a statue of Lois Lane (well, the original actress who played her.

The lady at the Chamber of Commerce info center suggests I visit the Garden of the Gods, in the Shawnee National Forest, warning me to be careful, as several people "lost their lives" by falling off.  Well, I tend to stay away from edges anyway, but I'm glad I followed her suggestion - what a beautiful place.  Spectacular views, unusual rock formations, and a ridge-top campsite that was swept by cool breezes during the night,  The nearby group of bikers (Harleys) was even quiet around their campfire.

It looks like wood, but it's actually rock, folded and folded

  1. Dear Eve,
Love the rock formations! Chuck and I must add this to our biker places to visit. Bikers get a bad rap as noisy. We are old and need our sleep!
    Love the pictures & blog
